I share your disquiet about this whole episode but on balance, and its as fine a line as you can get, I think the beeb have made the right decision. The key issue is this: Question Time is a programme where members of the public have the opportunity to question, amongst others, elected politicians. I would have no time for the beeb if they had invited the Dutch politician Geert Wilders (maker of the film Fitna) for instance. But in the end, love it or loathe it, enough Brits voted for BNP to get him into the European Parliament. Maybe the best thing that will come out of this is a wake up call for everyone. The old agage still holds: for evil to triumph, all that is needed is for good people to do nothing.

I did not watch the programme as I had thrown my TV out years ago to avoid the constant PC and government propaganda.
I knew that Dimbleby and the bbc would ambush the BNP and also believed that this was going to be an own goal, as people would see through this artifice and eventually support the underdog.
As one person stated on the World Programme this morning this was not QT but a kicking game - and there was I believing that bearbaiting was not legal in the UK.
