I am married to Sheila, and have two children both now older than we were when they were born!
Before retiring I was Principal of the Scottish Baptist College. I have been pastor in several Scottish Baptist churches, and currently part time minister in Montrose Baptist Church. I am an Honorary Lecturer in the Scholl of Divinity, History and Philosophy at the University of Aberdeen..
Research interests include Evangelical spirituality, reception history of the Bible and history of NT interpretation. I am using my semi-retirement to read more of what I want to read for enjoyment without the constraints of academic teaching.
Some favourite theological authors:- Dietrich Bonhoeffer, John Webster, James Denney, P T Forsyth, Abraham Heschel, Julian of Norwich, Thomas Merton, Jurgen Moltmann. Biblical theologians I like and learn from while often disagreeing, are Walter Brueggemann, N T Wright, J D G Dunn.
Poets I spend a lot of time with are Emily Dickinson, R S Thomas, George Herbert, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Elizabeth Jennings, Wendell Berry, Mary Oliver and Denise Levertov.
Hobbies include photography; creating and working tapestries, some of them as visual exegesis of biblical texts; cooking; and cycling the back roads of Aberdeenshire.
I'm an incurably omnivorous reader. Historical theology, biblical exegesis. theology and the arts, and spirituality are areas of research; but novels, poetry, philosophy and intellectual biography have their fascination too. When opportunity arises I cook, this blog is a quite large tip of my writing iceberg, I design and work tapestry, play with elementary haiku and fibonacci, have begun to enjoy photography and have a small list of places I really need to visit before I die!
